1940's Victoria County Jail

The 1940 Victoria County Jail was designed by Kai Leffland, son of famed Victoria architect Jules Leffland. His Art Deco design incorporated limestone, brick and concrete into its construction. Though seemingly plain from a distance, closer inspection reveals the facade’s artistry and detailed Art Deco features. Deferred maintenance, along with the recent removal of ornamentation from the facade, has greatly altered the appearance of the building.

State-of-the-art for its day, the 1940 jail was eventually supplanted by the much larger building across the street, completed in 1984.
